I’m 40 books behind schedule – so here’s 40 books I want to read before the end of the year

So if you follow me on Twitter and/or Goodreads, you may have seen me talking about how I’m 40 books behind schedule on my Goodreads challenge. I set it REALLY high at 200 books, so I wasn’t expecting it finish it, but I also wasn’t expecting to get quite this behind.

I’ve been really wanting to catch up with my challenge but 40 books seems so overwhelming. I’ve been toying with trying to have a crazy reading month where I read all my short books I try to read like .. as close to 40 books as I can .. but I think it’d just put me in a massive reading slump. I don’t really mind being behind on my challenge and my challenge has never bothered me in terms of making me feel stress.

But being so far behind and toying with the idea of trying to read 40 books in a month had me thinking .. what ARE the 40 books I would most want to read before the end of the year? So this is that post. Forty books I would want to read to catch up on my reading challenge before the end of the year.

I’ve separated them into five categories so there will be eight books per category. This is gonna be a LONG post so lets get into it.

1: Unravel Me by Teherah Mafi

2: Ignite Me by Teherah Mafi

3: Red Seas Under Res Skies by Scott Lynch

4: The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

5: A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi

6: Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers

7: Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken

8: In the Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken

9: Cloaked in Shadow by Ben Alderson

10: A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

11: The Last of August by Brittany Cavallaro

12: Wonderwoman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

13: Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu

14: Captive Prince by C.S Pacat

15: Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

16: Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

17: These Rebel Waves by Sara Raasch

18: Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

19: Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare

20: The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White

21: Song of the Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh

22: The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

23: The Summer of Jordi Perez by Amy Spalding

24: Vengeful by V.E Schwab

25: The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman

26: Release by Patrick Ness

27: We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

28: Gap Year in Ghost Town by Michael Pryor

29: The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

30: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

31: Palom by L.L McNeil

32: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

33: More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

34: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

35: City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

36: Dear Martin by Nic Stone

37: The Obelisk Gate by N.K Jemisin

38: The Stone in the Sky by N.K Jemisin

39: Circe by Madeline Miller

40: Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers

So those are just forty books that I want to read before the end of the year. It’s gonna be a big challenge to catch up and I don’t think I will succeed but it was interesting to make this list anyway and sort out which books on my TBR I really want to read compared to others. How is your challenge going and what books do you need to read before the end of the year?

until next time!

  1. Wonderful list, I really hope you will love these books! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Book of Dust 🙂 I also really want to read A Crown of Wishes, hopefully before the year ends 😀 Happy reading!

  2. i had mine at 200 for a bit but it was stressing me out to keep up with it so i lowered it! i envy your ability to not get stressed out by it – especially b/c it’s relatively meaningless, ha.

you have some excellent reads ahead of you on this list!! (especially pride and prejudice and gone girl.) good luck/happy reading!

  3. Ahh good luck with your Goodreads challenge!! You’ll do great no matter how many books you end up reading before the end of the year. 💖 My Goodreads challenge is much lower than yours haha; I set it to 40 books (it was originally at 50, but I lowered it before school started because I didn’t think I’d have enough time to read 50 books). But now I’m 7 books ahead of schedule, surprisingly, so maybe I’ll reach 50 after all!

I’ve been wanting to read Circe, Dear Martin, and The Summer of Jordi Perez as well! You listed such great books in this post. 😍

  4. I finished my challenge but just barely. I upped it to 40 and I’m hoping to actually read more than that this year. The books that I haven’t read that I’m also interested in (if you haven’t read them already) are: Shatter Me series, A Study in Charlotte series, Batman: Nightwalker, Muse of Nightmares, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, Circe, More Happy Than Not, and Dear Martin. I highly recommend you finish the Darkest Minds trilogy as well as read A Crown of Wishes as both are my faves. I also really enjoyed Wonder Woman: Warbringer!
