So at the beginning of the year I joined a challenge called Beat the Backlist. The point of this challenge is to try and read as many books from your backlist TBR as you can. I decided to do a little update of what I’ve managed to complete and what I still need to get through. I haven’t even looked at this TBR all year but it’s been vaguely in the back of my mind so I’m interested myself in seeing what I have read. Lets get into it!
BOOK ON MY TBR I COMPLETED:
➢ The Enemy Series by Charlie Higson: I finished this whole series and really enjoyed it. I’ve been trying to finish this series for years so finishing it feels good.
➢ Spellslinger by Sebastian deCastell: I own this book which is why I really wanted to read it. I really .. didn’t enjoy it much. It was okay but not great. Here’s my review.
➢ The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken: I said I wanted to read this before the movie came out and I did manage to do that! I enjoyed this way more than expected to.
➢ Vicious by V.E Schwab: This was one of my top 2018 TBR’s and I am so glad I read it because I loved it a lot. This was so cool and my second favourite Schwab book after A Conjuring of Light. I cannot wait for the sequel Vengeful to come out.
➢ The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan: I finally read this book and not only that, I went on and completed the entire series! I feel super proud for finally doing that.
➢ Shatter Me by Teherah Mafi: I was getting some serious pressure from my friends offline to read this and I finally did it, and now I’m reading Unravel Me. I think these books are super fun and the writing is really great.
➢ Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor: I didn’t love book one but I ended up enjoying book two and three so much more. Choosing to continue this series despite finding book one mediocre was a good plan, and the audiobooks are really good!
BOOK ON MY REREAD TBR I REREAD:
➢ Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: This was the first book I read in 2018 and I also reread Crooked Kingdom on audiobook. I love this series !! so !! much !!!!!
➢ Radio Silence by Alice Oseman: I reread this one night because I wasn’t feeling good and I thought it’d be comforting and I loved it as much as the first time. I love these characters so so much.
➢ The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic: I only reread this last month but it was AS GOOD as always. I love the Foxes so fucking much and even though this is easily my least favourite of the series I love it a lot.
➢ Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli: I wanted to read this before Love, Simon came out, which I did. And oh my god I love it but I loved Love, Simon soo much too.
STILL ON MY TBR:
➢ Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld: This is an alternate history series that I liked the first book of a lot but I’m having trouble finding the second book? I am hoping I can get my hands on it soon because this series is heckin cool.
➢ The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud: I wanted to read this before Love, Simon came out, which I did. And oh my god I love it but I loved Love, Simon soo much too.
➢ Eyes of Ember by Rebecca Ethington: I wanted to read this before Love, Simon came out, which I did. And oh my god I love it but I loved Love, Simon soo much too.
➢ A Crown of Wished by Roshani Chokshi: I wanted to read this before Love, Simon came out, which I did. And oh my god I love it but I loved Love, Simon soo much too.
➢ The Gentleman Bastard Sequence by Scott Lynch: I keep putting this series on my TBR and keep not reading it. I really WANT to but the books are so long. But Red Seas Under Red Skies is on this months TBR and I’m feeling good about it.
➢ Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare (reread): I haven’t reread this yet but it’s okay, I plan on reading it this month hopefully and I am SO excited I love these books so much.
➢ The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo (reread) : I wanted to read this before Love, Simon came out, which I did. And oh my god I love it but I loved Love, Simon soo much too.
Backlist TBR completed:7/12
Reread TBR completed: 4/6
Total TBR completed: 11/18 (61%)
So overall I’ve done SO well in this challenge and could definitely finish it by the end of the year. When I made this TBR at the beginning of the year I said it was ambitious and I have done so well so far so that makes me feels super accomplished. It’s definitely been good to take some time to read backlist titles since I think they often get thrown on the wayside in favour of newer books that are coming out. There’s so many hyped up series I never got to because I went a few years without reading and it’s nice to go back to them and feel like I’ve been filled in on what everyone is talking about with those characters/worlds.
until next time!
