anticipated 2021 releases for the first half of the year

Hi all! I’m putting together one of my favourite posts today, my anticipated releases for the year! There is SO many incredible sounding books coming out in 2021 and I just really wanted to talk about them. Last year, I didn’t keep up with new releases very well at all. I was more focussed on my backlist and reading my physical TBR. This year, I’m hoping to read a lot more new books. So I wanted to put together the list of the ones which are grabbing my attention the most. I would love to hear which books you’re anticipating in the comments, as I obviously haven’t heard of everything and I want to keep expanding my list. Now let’s jump into it!

➤ Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas

If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison. Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control. Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can’t just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

Angie Thomas’ third book follows the father of Starr, Maverick Carter, in his youth. I loved both of Angie Thomas’ previous books, and I have no doubt I will love this one too. Thomas writes such amazing, interesting protagonists and I love the themes she explores in all her books. Can’t wait to pick it up.

➤ The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C.M Waggoner

A charming historical fantasy with a tender love story at its core, from the author of Unnatural Magic.

Hard-drinking petty thief Dellaria Wells is down on her luck in the city of Leiscourt—again. Then she sees a want ad for a female bodyguard, and she fast-talks her way into the high-paying job. Along with a team of other women, she’s meant to protect a rich young lady from mysterious assassins.

At first Delly thinks the danger is exaggerated, but a series of attacks shows there’s much to fear. Then she begins to fall for Winn, one of the other bodyguards, and the women team up against a mysterious, magical foe who seems to have allies everywhere.

This book sounds like EVERYTHING? Historical fantasy, which is my favourite, a thief as a main character and a bodyguard romance trope? With an f/f relationship? Like honestly this seems SO up my alley and I can’t believe it’s already out because I’m so excited to read it.

➤ How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps her House by Cherie Jones

In Baxter Beach, Barbados, moneyed ex-pats clash with the locals who often end up serving them: braiding their hair, minding their children, and selling them drugs. Lala lives on the beach with her husband, Adan, a petty criminal with endless charisma whose thwarted burglary of one of the Baxter Beach mansions sets off a chain of events with terrible consequences. A gunshot no one was meant to witness. A new mother whose baby is found lifeless on the beach. A woman torn between two worlds and incapacitated by grief. And two men driven by desperation and greed who attempt a crime that will risk their freedom — and their lives.

This is one of those books I’ve seen a log of hype for from booksellers and librarians who have read the manuscript/arc. So that is one major reason I want to read it. But honestly it’s more just that the premise really appeals to me, and I can’t explain why exactly, but I really like stories that focus around lots of people who a loosely connected, which is what this is. So I think I’ll really like it.

➤ Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

Klara and the Sun, the first novel by Kazuo Ishiguro since he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, tells the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her.

I love Kazuo Ishiguro, so that is why he’s here. This isn’t my favourite of his premises, but I trust him and I’m definitely excited to read this! It’s been a while since his last book came out so I’m sure many people are anticipating this one.

➤ Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley

As a biracial, unenrolled tribal member and the product of a scandal, eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. Daunis dreams of studying medicine, but when her family is struck by tragedy, she puts her future on hold to care for her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team. Yet even as Daunis falls for Jamie, certain details don’t add up and she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder, thrusting her into the heart of a criminal investigation. Reluctantly, Daunis agrees to go undercover, but secretly pursues her own investigation, tracking down the criminals with her knowledge of chemistry and traditional medicine. But the deceptions—and deaths—keep piling up and soon the threat strikes too close to home.

This sounds AMAZING? I’ve been wanting to read more books by Indigenous authors, but I also just really love investigation stories? It’s kind of giving me Truly Devious vibes, which is a series I really enjoyed. I also really like romances with people on sports teams because I love sports……. anyways, really hope this is as good and fun as it sounds!

➤ The Project by Courtney Summers

Lo Denham is used to being on her own. After her parents died, Lo’s sister, Bea, joined The Unity Project, leaving Lo in the care of their great aunt. Thanks to its extensive charitable work and community outreach, The Unity Project has won the hearts and minds of most in the Upstate New York region, but Lo knows there’s more to the group than meets the eye. She’s spent the last six years of her life trying—and failing—to prove it.When a man shows up at the magazine Lo works for claiming The Unity Project killed his son, Lo sees the perfect opportunity to expose the group and reunite with Bea once and for all. When her investigation puts her in the direct path of its leader, Lev Warren and as Lo delves deeper into The Project, the lives of its members it upends everything she thought she knew about her sister, herself, cults, and the world around her—to the point she can no longer tell what’s real or true. Lo never thought she could afford to believe in Lev Warren . . . but now she doesn’t know if she can afford not to.

I loved Sadie by Courtney Summers so much so I was of course interested in her next book. This book also GIVES ME massive Sadie vibes which I am soo intrigued by. I really find reading about cults interesting and the plot involving a magazine really reminds me of Sadie, so I hope it has a great audiobook and the same back and forth kind of thing that book did.

➤ We Run the Tides by Vendela Vida

Teenage Eulabee and her magnetic best friend, Maria Fabiola, own the streets of Sea Cliff, their foggy oceanside San Francisco neighborhood. They know Sea Cliff’s homes and beaches, its hidden corners and eccentric characters—as well as the upscale all-girls’ school they attend. One day, walking to school with friends, they witness a horrible act—or do they? Eulabee and Maria Fabiola vehemently disagree on what happened, and their rupture is followed by Maria Fabiola’s sudden disappearance—a potential kidnapping that shakes the quiet community and threatens to expose unspoken truths.

Suspenseful and poignant, We Run the Tides is Vendela Vida’s masterful portrait of an inimitable place on the brink of radical transformation. Pre–tech boom San Francisco finds its mirror in the changing lives of the teenage girls at the center of this story of innocence lost, the pain of too much freedom, and the struggle to find one’s authentic self. Told with a gimlet eye and great warmth, We Run the Tides is both a gripping mystery and a tribute to the wonders of youth, in all its beauty and confusion.

The premise of this book just sounds like…. everything I love. Best friends are one of my favourite friendships in fiction and so under explored, and I really love books about nostalgia and a mystery in the past. Also, I find San Francisco a really interesting city to read about for some reason, I love so much media that centres around San Francisco? This book just sounds like it was written for me I can’t wait for it.

➤ The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna

Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.

Okay, I’m gonna be honest – this one is here a little bit for the hype? The premise sounds okay to me, but it’s the really good early reviews coming in that really makes me wanna read it. But I do love books that centre on groups of people with gifts, and I’ve heard people who like Children of Blood and Bone might like this, and I enjoyed that book.

➤ A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth

For centuries, the Eight Courts of Folk have lived among us, concealed by magic and bound by law to do no harm to humans. This arrangement has long kept peace in the Courts—until a series of gruesome and ritualistic murders rocks the city of Toronto and threatens to expose faeries to the human world.

Four queer teens, each who hold a key piece of the truth behind these murders, must form a tenuous alliance in their effort to track down the mysterious killer behind these crimes. If they fail, they risk the destruction of the faerie and human worlds alike. If that’s not bad enough, there’s a war brewing between the Mortal and Immortal Realms, and one of these teens is destined to tip the scales. The only question is: which way?

Wish them luck. They’re going to need it.

IS THIS NOT EVERYTHING? Fae, murder, found family /unlike alliance trope, and I’m fairly sure it has an f/f relationship… and an all queer cast? I loove queer fantasy so much and this just sounds so fun I can’t wait for it. Also, I’ve seen some great reviews coming out already

➤ She’s Too Pretty to Burn by Wendy Heard

The summer is winding down in San Diego. Veronica is bored, caustically charismatic, and uninspired in her photography. Nico is insatiable, subversive, and obsessed with chaotic performance art. They’re artists first, best friends second. But that was before Mick. Delicate, lonely, magnetic Mick: the perfect subject, and Veronica’s dream girl. The days are long and hot―full of adventure―and soon they are falling in love. Falling so hard, they never imagine what comes next. One fire. Two murders. Three drowning bodies. One suspect . . . one stalker. This is a summer they won’t survive.

This book has been on my 2021 tbr since the second it was announced. Why? F/F RETELLING OF THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY! Need to say any more. It says it’s a ‘sexy psychological thriller exploring the intersections between beauty, art, and love’ like… extremely up my alley stuff, and I cannot wait to read it. I think this is really up there as possibly my most anticipated release.

➤ The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

One cold February evening in 1791, at the back of a dark London alley in a hidden apothecary shop, Nella awaits her newest customer. Once a respected healer, Nella now uses her knowledge for a darker purpose—selling well-disguised poisons to desperate women who would kill to be free of the men in their lives. But when her new patron turns out to be a precocious twelve-year-old named Eliza Fanning, an unexpected friendship sets in motion a string of events that jeopardizes Nella’s world and threatens to expose the many women whose names are written in her register.

In present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, reeling from the discovery of her husband’s infidelity. When she finds an old apothecary vial near the river Thames, she can’t resist investigating, only to realize she’s found a link to the unsolved “apothecary murders” that haunted London over two centuries ago. As she deepens her search, Caroline’s life collides with Nella’s and Eliza’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive.

I really love books that have a present and a past timeline and then the two merge. So this is basically what appealed to me to this book. Also the premise of this just sounds really intriguing and interesting, so I really hope I enjoy this one! I also love the cover

➤ The Girls are All So Nice Here by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn

Two former best friends return to their college reunion to find that they’re being circled by someone who wants revenge for what they did ten years before—and will stop at nothing to get it—in this shocking psychological thriller about ambition, toxic friendship, and deadly desire.

I LOVE books like this. Like I mentioned earlier, books about best friends are a favourite, but I really like books that involve something about the past being revealed. Mean girls in college is definitely something I want to read more of because I love them every time I read them. I just wish it had a better cover.

➤ Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

Eve Brown is a certified hot mess. No matter how hard she strives to do right, her life always goes horribly wrong—so she’s given up trying. But when her personal brand of chaos ruins an expensive wedding (someone had to liberate those poor doves), her parents draw the line. It’s time for Eve to grow up and prove herself—even though she’s not entirely sure how…

Jacob Wayne is in control. Always. The bed and breakfast owner’s on a mission to dominate the hospitality industry—and he expects nothing less than perfection. So when a purple-haired tornado of a woman turns up out of the blue to interview for his open chef position, he tells her the brutal truth: not a chance in hell. Then she hits him with her car—supposedly by accident. Yeah, right.

Now his arm is broken, his B&B is understaffed, and the dangerously unpredictable Eve is fluttering around, trying to help. Before long, she’s infiltrated his work, his kitchen—and his spare bedroom. Jacob hates everything about it. Or rather, he should. Sunny, chaotic Eve is his natural-born nemesis, but the longer these two enemies spend in close quarters, the more their animosity turns into something else. Like Eve, the heat between them is impossible to ignore—and it’s melting Jacob’s frosty exterior.

I read Get a Life, Chloe Brown in 2020 and I liked it so much! It was so funny and I thought Talia Hibbert did such a good job at portraying the sisters as side characters. Eve was my favourite of the sisters we see so I cannot wait for this. I do plan on reading Take a Hint, Dani Brown first but I will be definitely picking this up and finishing off the series.

➤ Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales

In Sophie Gonzales’ Perfect on Paper, a bisexual girl who gives anonymous love advice to her classmates is hired by the hot guy to help him get his ex back

Her advice, spot on. Her love life, way off.

However, when Brougham catches her in the act of collecting letters from locker 89―out of which she’s been running her questionably legal, anonymous relationship advice service―that’s exactly what happens.

In exchange for keeping her secret, Darcy begrudgingly agrees to become his personal dating coach―at a generous hourly rate, at least. The goal? To help him win his ex-girlfriend back.

Darcy has a good reason to keep her identity secret. If word gets out that she’s behind the locker, some things she’s not proud of will come to light, and there’s a good chance Brooke will never speak to her again.Okay, so all she has to do is help an entitled, bratty, (annoyingly hot) guy win over a girl who’s already fallen for him once? What could go wrong

I really liked Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales which I read in 2020, and I’m so excited for this one because of the bisexual main character. The bi rep in Only Mostly Devastated was really well done and I’m interested to see how she explores it in a book with a bi main character. But also, this recent trend of anonymous letters and advice in YA is one I’ve been loving, I like To All the Boys I’ve Loved before which this is compared to, and I liked Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts) which is sounds very similar to.

➤ Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley

Tamsin is the most powerful witch of her generation. But after committing the worst magical sin, she’s exiled by the ruling Coven and cursed with the inability to love. The only way she can get those feelings back—even for just a little while—is to steal love from others.Wren is a source—a rare kind of person who is made of magic, despite being unable to use it herself. Sources are required to train with the Coven as soon as they discover their abilities, but Wren—the only caretaker to her ailing father—has spent her life hiding her secret. When a magical plague ravages the queendom, Wren’s father falls victim. To save him, Wren proposes a bargain: if Tamsin will help her catch the dark witch responsible for creating the plague, then Wren will give Tamsin her love for her father.Of course, love bargains are a tricky thing, and these two have a long, perilous journey ahead of them—that is, if they don’t kill each other first..

I am a simple person…. I see magic sapphics….. I add to TBR. But for real, I love queer fantasy like I’ve said, and this is compared to Girls of Paper and Fire which I really loved.

➤ Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

A reluctant medium discovers the ties that bind can unleash a dangerous power in this compelling Malaysian-set contemporary fantasy.

Jessamyn Teoh is closeted, broke and moving back to Malaysia, a country she left when she was a toddler. So when Jess starts hearing voices, she chalks it up to stress. But there’s only one voice in her head, and it claims to be the ghost of her estranged grandmother, Ah Ma. In life Ah Ma was a spirit medium, the avatar of a mysterious deity called the Black Water Sister. Now she’s determined to settle a score against a gang boss who has offended the god–and she’s decided Jess is going to help her do it.

Drawn into a world of gods, ghosts, and family secrets, Jess finds that making deals with capricious spirits is a dangerous business. As Jess fights for retribution for Ah Ma, she’ll also need to regain control of her body and destiny. If she fails, the Black Water Sister may finish her off for good.

As I mentioned earlier, reading from more countries is an aim of mine this year, and Malaysian fantasy is definitely something I want to be more into! I have read a few others and I liked them, so I’m hoping I like this one too. I also have kind of been back into paranormal books again, which is cool cos I used to really love them, so I thought the premise sounded super intriguing. Also, settle a score against a gang boss who offended a god? have you EVER heard a cooler line.

➤ The Unbroken by C.L Clark

Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought.

Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet’s edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne.Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation. But some things aren’t for sale.

It’s a sapphic, North-African inspired military fantasy with political elements and an f/f romance NEED I SAY MORE. In all seriousness, I love political fantasy a lot, and have been thinking of trying out more military fantasy after loving The Poppy War so much. I think I’m going to really like this book!

➤ Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

The Demon King. As Fjerda’s massive army prepares to invade, Nikolai Lantsov will summon every bit of his ingenuity and charm—and even the monster within—to win this fight. But a dark threat looms that cannot be defeated by a young king’s gift for the impossible.

The Stormwitch. Zoya Nazyalensky has lost too much to war. She saw her mentor die and her worst enemy resurrected, and she refuses to bury another friend. Now duty demands she embrace her powers to become the weapon her country needs. No matter the cost.

The Queen of Mourning. Deep undercover, Nina Zenik risks discovery and death as she wages war on Fjerda from inside its capital. But her desire for revenge may cost her country its chance at freedom and Nina the chance to heal her grieving heart.

King. General. Spy. Together they must find a way to forge a future in the darkness. Or watch a nation fall.

Okay not much needs to be said here… it’s the sequel to King of Scars / Leigh Bardugo’s new book set in the Grisha universe , which I LOVE SO MUCH. I plan to reread the series before it comes out, I’m so excited!

➤ The Helm of Midnight by Marina Lostetter

A legendary serial killer stalks the streets of a fantastical city in The Helm of Midnight, the stunning first novel in a new trilogy from acclaimed author Marina Lostetter.

In a daring and deadly heist, thieves have made away with an artifact of terrible power–the death mask of Louis Charbon. Made by a master craftsman, it is imbued with the spirit of a monster from history, a serial murderer who terrorized the city with a series of gruesome murders.

Now Charbon is loose once more, killing from beyond the grave. But these murders are different from before, not simply random but the work of a deliberate mind probing for answers to a sinister question. It is up to Krona Hirvath and her fellow Regulators to enter the mind of madness to stop this insatiable killer while facing the terrible truths left in his wake.

I mean… read the premise… doesn’t this sound SO GOOD. A ghost serial killer on the loose, ticking my paranormal and mystery moods off, and a HEIST, which I always love. Also it’s a fantasy series and I really need to start more because a lot of mine are ending and I want to get invested in new stuff. Honestly I just think the premise of this sound so fucking good I can’t wait.

➤ The Serpents Curse by Lisa Maxwell

A legendary serial killer stalks the streets of a fantastical city in The Helm of Midnight, the stunning first novel in a new trilogy from acclaimed author Marina Lostetter.

In a daring and deadly heist, thieves have made away with an artifact of terrible power–the death mask of Louis Charbon. Made by a master craftsman, it is imbued with the spirit of a monster from history, a serial murderer who terrorized the city with a series of gruesome murders.

But these murders are different from before, not simply random but the work of a deliberate mind probing for answers to a sinister question. It is up to Krona Hirvath and her fellow Regulators to enter the mind of madness to stop this insatiable killer while facing the terrible truths left in his wake.

This is the final book in one of my all time favourite series, and I’m both so excited to see how it ends, and so sad that it’s ending! This series is SO underrated I truly wish it had got more attention, it’s historical fantasy set in the 1920s with heists and an enemies to lovers romance and I ADORE IT. I’ve already preordered it, so you know I’m listening on release day.

➤ Off the Record by Camryn Garrett

Ever since seventeen-year-old Josie Wright can remember, writing has been her identity, the thing that grounds her when everything else is a garbage fire. So when she wins a contest to write a celebrity profile for Deep Focus magazine, she’s equal parts excited and scared, but also ready. She’s got this.

Soon Josie is jetting off on a multi-city tour, rubbing elbows with sparkly celebrities, frenetic handlers, stone-faced producers, and eccentric stylists. She even finds herself catching feelings for the subject of her profile, dazzling young newcomer Marius Canet. Josie’s world is expanding so rapidly, she doesn’t know whether she’s flying or falling. But when a young actress lets her in on a terrible secret, the answer is clear: she’s in over her head.

One woman’s account leads to another and another. Josie wants to expose the man responsible, but she’s reluctant to speak up, unsure if this is her story to tell. What if she lets down the women who have entrusted her with their stories? What if this ends her writing career before it even begins? There are so many reasons not to go ahead, but if Josie doesn’t step up, who will?

Camryn is someone who I love reading from. From her tweets, to her books, I love all her content. I just recently read Full Disclosure and I thought it was just so great, like I adored the characters and the themes and the vulnerability it had. Plus the main romance was so cute. So I have super high hopes for this! The premise actually sounds way more up my alley than Full Disclosure’s did, so I cannot wait to see what Camryn does with it.

➤ Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever.

Malibu: August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over–especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud–because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there. And Kit has a couple secrets of her own–including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come bubbling to the surface.

TAYLOR JENKINS REID. I have loved her last two books so much and yet again she is bringing something that just sounds So Up My Alley out. I actually love books about famous people, and Reid is the queen of them at the moment. The mystery element is also intriguing me so much, and the sibling relationships. I can’t wait for this one.

➤ One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston

For cynical twenty-three-year-old August, moving to New York City is supposed to prove her right: that things like magic and cinematic love stories don’t exist, and the only smart way to go through life is alone. She can’t imagine how waiting tables at a 24-hour pancake diner and moving in with too many weird roommates could possibly change that. And there’s certainly no chance of her subway commute being anything more than a daily trudge through boredom and electrical failures. But then, there’s this gorgeous girl on the train.

Jane. Dazzling, charming, mysterious, impossible Jane. Jane with her rough edges and swoopy hair and soft smile, showing up in a leather jacket to save August’s day when she needed it most. August’s subway crush becomes the best part of her day, but pretty soon, she discovers there’s one big problem: Jane doesn’t just look like an old school punk rocker. She’s literally displaced in time from the 1970s, and August is going to have to use everything she tried to leave in her own past to help her. Maybe it’s time to start believing in some things, after all.

CASEY MCQUISTON. I admit, I loved Red, White and Royal Blue. It was kind of silly, but that is what I liked. It was funny and easy and I thought the characters were really well written. The snippets that have come out about this book already have me so excited and I have seen sooo many positive reviews from ownvoices reviewers saying the representation and romance is amazing, so I cannot wait.

➤ Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Afia

Harlem, 1926. Young black girls like Louise Lloyd are ending up dead.Following a harrowing kidnapping ordeal when she was in her teens, Louise is doing everything she can to maintain a normal life. She’s succeeding, too. She spends her days working at Maggie’s Café and her nights at the Zodiac, Manhattan’s hottest speakeasy. Louise’s friends might say she’s running from her past and the notoriety that still stalks her, but don’t tell her that.

When a girl turns up dead in front of the café, Louise is forced to confront something she’s been trying to ignore–several local black girls have been murdered over the past few weeks. After an altercation with a local police officer gets her arrested, Louise is given an ultimatum: She can either help solve the case or let a judge make an example of her.

Louise has no choice but to take the case and soon finds herself toe-to-toe with a murderous mastermind. She’ll have to tackle her own fears and the prejudices of New York City society if she wants to catch a killer and save her own life in the process.

A Black flapper takes it upon herself to investigate the murders of girls in Harlem? That already has me sold without even having to say much more. But I’m also intrigued by the parts of the premise that suggest this will also look at the experiences of Black women in the 20s.

➤ The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo

Jordan Baker grows up in the most rarefied circles of 1920s American society―she has money, education, a killer golf handicap, and invitations to some of the most exclusive parties of the Jazz Age. She’s also queer, Asian, adopted, and treated as an exotic attraction by her peers, while the most important doors remain closed to her.

But the world is full of wonders: infernal pacts and dazzling illusions, lost ghosts and elemental mysteries. In all paper is fire, and Jordan can burn the cut paper heart out of a man. She just has to learn how.

Great Gatsby retelling which focusses on Jordan Baker and reimagines her as an Asian queer woman WOW. I really love The Great Gatsby and now that it’s in the public domain I am so excited to see which each author does with it. This sounds so creative and is kind of giving me Wide Sargasso Sea vibes which is so cool.

➤ Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school’s senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too.

Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures.

As Aces shows no sign of stopping, what seemed like a sick prank quickly turns into a dangerous game, with all the cards stacked against them. Can Devon and Chiamaka stop Aces before things become incredibly deadly?

Compared to GOSSIP GIRL and GET OUT? Have you ever heard better comp titles in your life. Like this sounds genuinely so cool, and it’s another one I’m excited for for the mystery and anonymous messaging stuff.

And there we have it! This is such a long post, and it didn’t even cover everything, just the ones that really are at the tippy-top of my list. Also, apologies for getting this post out super late so some of the books are already out.. sometimes… it be like that.

The second half is already shaping up to have some great releases (NEW SALLY ROONEY!!) but I’m gonna hold off posting an anticipated releases list until it gets a little close.

I would love to hear in the comments which books you are excited about for the first half of 2021.

5 MOST ANTICIPATED UPCOMING FANTASY RELEASES

Hi all  !   So I love love love fantasy but the last two years I thought it kind of hit a bit of a slump. I found I wasn’t anticipating so many fantasy books which was rough for me. BUT! In 2019 fantasy is on the come back. There is so many fantasy titles coming out I am excited about so I decided to share some of those today. Lets get into it.

break

The Dragon Republic by R.F Kuang – August 6th 2019

41118857

The Dragon Republic is the highly anticipated sequel to The Poppy War – which was one of my favourite books of 2018. I am dying to read this book – The Poppy War had such an explosive ending, I need to know what happens. But on top of that, Kuang writes such genuinely strong and impactful fantasy, and I love her approach in blending historical and fantasy elements.

ARCs of this book are in the wild and the reviews coming in are all extremely positive. I cannot wait to get my hands on this (I actually already preordered the audiobook!). This is going to be HUGE I know it.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo – October 1st 2019

43263680

Ninth House is Leigh Bardugo’s highly anticipated adult release. Set at Yale, it follows Alex who has to infiltrate and investigate Yale’s secret societies. The fantasy elements are in the form of the occult – and the strange things happening inside these societies that can’t be explained away with normal reasoning.

I am SO intrigued by this. This is Bardugo’s first adult so it’ll be interesting to see how it differs from her young adult. But I love her books so I’m sure I will love this. The book has been a little vague so far on how much fantasy is in this, but I hope its a bit because Urban Fantasy is A FAVE.

The Black Veins by Ashia Monet – July 17th 2019

43927569

Ashia Monet is one of my mutuals on twitter but even if she wasn’t this would be on my TBR. This book has gone by #GuardianWIP on twitter for a while, but now its finally nearly out and I am SO EXCITED. This follows a group of magicians called the Guardians who are thrust into a war between opposing Magician factions. It has found family, a diverse cast, road trips and no !! romances !!

I am so, so excited about this. I think it is going to be something I really really love and my friends who have read it have given it a big tick of approval.

King of Fools by Amanda Foody – April 30th 2019

37545571

King of Fools is the sequel to Ace of Shades, a series I started last year that I quickly fell in love with. The first book follows Enne – who travels to The City of Sin (a fantasy Las Vegas) to find her missing mum, but gets involved with street gangs and a crime lord called Levi who might be the only person who can help find her mum.

The first book of this was SO GOOD. I loved the characters and am looking forward to seeing them again in King of Fools. Amanda Foody is such a talented writer and I have no doubt King of Fools is going to blow me away.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance – December 3rd 2019

39122774

First of all… COVER. OF. THE. YEAR. This is so stunning! I cannot believe it !! Absolutely amazing !! Anyway that all said, this is the sequel to the hit fantasy Children of Blood and Bone, which I read last year and really enjoyed. This is a Nigerian inspired fantasy story about a girl trying to return magic to her home – and has a lot of Avatar: The Last Airbender elements I was living for.

In the sequel, I’m really hoping for more character development and development of character relationships. But this is pretty much already guaranteed to be another hit.

While there is definitely more coming out I am excited for, these are all the fantasy I am most highly anticipating. I am so excited for them all and just .. I could have requested an ARC but I waited because I wanted to listen to the audiobook and yall … I have regrets) What fantasy books are you looking forward to in 2019?

MOST ANTICIPATED 2019 RELEASES

JANUARY

In An Absent Dream (Wayward Children #4) by Seanan McGuire ➳ Jan 8th:   I LOVE this series and have been listening to them as they come out since Down Among the Sticks and Bones. This series is so cute and I always end up loving the characters. This follows one of the original characters in the first book and I’m so excited to see what McGuire does with their story.

Once Ghosted, Twice Shy by Alyssa Cole ➳ Jan 8th:   I haven’t read any of the Reluctant Royals books yet but I’ve been meaning to. (I just don’t reach for romance that often) But this is an f/f book in the series and I just love the cover so much so I WILL GET TO IT once I’ve got to the others.

The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) by Holly Black ➳ Jan 8th:   I have been waiting and waiting for this. The ARC reviews of this book are hugely positive and I miss Jude and Cardan. But I really need to reread book one as I’ve forgotten so much that happens.

Firestarter (Timekeeper #3) by Tara Sim ➳ Jan 15th:   I read Timekeeper this year and loved it. I still need to read Chainbreaker but my plan is to read Chainbreaker and Firestarter back to back when this comes out. This is an alternate Victorian England series with an m/m main couple and it’s so great.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi ➳ Jan 15th:   I don’t know heaps about what this is about but I’ve seen so many five star reviews from reviewers I love and I’ve loved Chokshi’s books in the past. Her writing is so stunning.

Ruse (Want #2) by Cindy Pon ➳ Jan 22nd:   Want is one of my favourite dystopians and I really loved the characters. This book focusses on Lingyi who was probably my favourite character so I am so hyped about it. I also need to reread Want before this comes out though!

King of Scars (Nikolai Duology #1) by Leigh Bardugo ➳ Jan 29th:   PROBABLY my most anticipated release of 2019 and I’ve literally had it preordered for six months. I love Bardugo’s writing so much and Nikolai is such an icon. Plus we get to see more Nina and Zoya and they’re literally my fave gals ever I’m so ready.

A Question of Holmes (Charlotte Holes #4) by Brittany Cavallaro ➳ Mar 5th:  I’ve been slowly but surely making my way through this series this year and although I still need to read A Case for Jaimie I’m so excited about this coming out! I feel like every book in this series will just get better.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance (Charlotte Holes #4) by Tomi Adeyemi ➳ Mar 5th:  ANOTHER SEQUEL I’M DYING FOR. God, Children of Blood and Bone was so good and I’m so ready!! I also need to reread book one for this series though whoops.

Internment by Samira Ahmed ➳ Mar 19th:  I loved Love, Hate & Other Filters so much and read it in like, one day. So I think this will be just as good. Although it’s more heavy than LH&OF I think Ahmed is the perfect person to write this story.

JUNE

The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War #2) by R.F Kuang ➳ June 4th:  The Poppy War was one of the best books of the year and also one of my favourite fantasies ever and so much was left unsaid. The cliffhanger was unreal I’m dying for this.

Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi ➳ June 11th:  This is another queer book I’m SO hyped about. This one is f/f and first of all, that cover kills me. Brown girls in love!! Anyway it’s a cheerleader/nerd enemies to lovers romance I’m ready to give my life for it.

Soul of Stars (Heart of Iron #2) by Ashley Poston ➳ June 23rd:  I felt meh about book one but the closer this sequel gets the more excited I am. I REALLY liked the characters but the plot wasn’t my favourite. But I feel book two has great potential and I’m curious about it.

Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo ➳ October:  Bardugo makes another appearence! This is her first book set outside the Grishaverse and is about secret societies and spies and it sounds great I’m hyped.

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASES – Books I’m looking forward to in the second half of 2018

Hi all! So it’s been a massive year for releases already. We had I Was Born For This, Leah on the Offbeat and Circe which were some of my biggest 2018 releases. Of course, A Court of Frost and Starlight and Restore Me came out, which were both a big deal in the general bookish world. Children of Blood and Bone made massive waves, Obsidio had everyone screaming and as we speak Ship It is getting massive BookTube hype. SO IT’S BEEN A BIG YEAR ALREADY.

But there is still soo many books to come! Which is where this post comes in. I’m going to be sharing some books I’m really looking forward to, that are releasing in the second half of the year. So lets get into it! (also these aren’t in any particular order!)

Untitled-1

1: Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare (4/12/18): Probably my most anticipated release of the year. I’m sorry but I’m SO invested in this series, and her conclusions always KILL ME.  I don’t know what to think of this book, it could go in so many directions. But I’m so so excited even though it’s so far away.

2: A Reaper at The Gates by Sabaa Tahir (12/6/18): This is getting SO CLOSE I cannot handle it. I’m not ready. The Ember Quartet is one of my favourite series, I freakin loved the end of Torch Against the Night and I’m so excited to see where this series goes, because I think it’s heading in a really exciting direction!

3: What if It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera (9/10/18): NAME A MORE ICONIC DUO. These two are the perfect co-writers for a contemporary romance. I’m soexcited for this book, I’m expecting it to be heartwrenching and adorable and I have an arc of it which I’m SO KEEN to get into.

4: City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab (28/8/18): I love Victoria Schwab and so of course I’m so interested to see how her first middle grade book goes. Victoria Schwab writes awesome supernatural/fantasy book and this paranormal featuring ghosts should also be great.

5: The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee (2/10/18): The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue was one of my favourite 2017 reads. It was adorable and fun and when it came out I said I wanted a Felicity sequel .. and now we’re GETTING IT. The extracts of this book have already killed me so I’m expecting it’ll be great.

6: Running with Lions by Julian Winters (7/6/18): This book is right up my alley. A diverse cast on a soccer team, with a friends to enemies to lovers m/m romance. SIGN ME UP.

7: Wildcard by Marie Lu (18/9/18): I LOVED Warcross and so I’m so excited for the sequel. I feel like Marie Lu could take this series in so many wild and wonderful directions so I can’t wait to see what she does with it. Also, I missed the characters so much!!

8: These Rebel Waves by Sara Raasch (7/8/18): UHH GAY PIRATES. NEED I SAY MORE. This sounds so excellent, since it’s fantasy and pirates and just everything I love in one.

9: Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman (11/11/18): I hardly know what this is about, but I really loved Starfish so of course I want to read this too. I’m super looking forward to it, it should be a great contemporary.

10: Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers (26/7/18): I am SO READY for this book! The Wayfarers is such a great series that I super love and I cannot wait for the finale. These books make me feel so warm and happy and I really missed this world.

Untitled-1

These are just ten of my most anticipated releases for the rest of 2018! These are so many more! This year has just been AMAZING for releases, it’s kind of overwhelming because I haven’t even finished reading the releases from the first half of this year, whoops.

What books are you guys looking forward to for the rest of the year?

until next time!

Top 18 Anticipated 2018 Releases

So as we get closer and closer to 2018 I get more and more excited about the books coming out I really want to read. I’ll provide links to the Goodread so you can all go add to your tbr 😜 I’ll be listing them in release order from most soon to least soon, plus will include some honourable mentions at the bottom. Untitled-1

1: Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

Another series conclusion, I love the Wayward Children series and this one follows Sumi whomst I loved in book one. I’m really interested in the setting of this book (a nonsense world) and also, I’ve listened to all these novellas on audible and the narration makes it so much more magical and beautiful I’m excited to hear the narration again. This one’s out on Jan 9 and I plan on listening the day it releases.

2: Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

I have an arc of this book and I’m very excited to dive into it. It follows an Indian/American muslim girl who is struggling to reconcile her parents beliefs with her own dreams to attend film school. It’s OwnVoices and I think it’s just going to be absolutely incredible. I plan on starting the arc soon but I definitely think this is going to be an amazing 2018 release. Coming Jan 16th!

3: Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

This is one of my most anticipated releases – it’s a high fantasy with an ensemble diverse cast, aka my favourite thing, and it’s coming out so so soon. it involved necromancers and magic, and all my friends who got arcs really loved it so overall I could NOT be more excited. I’m like 90% sure I’ve preordered this already but if not I’m going to! This is coming out Jan 23, soo sooon.

4: The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza by Shaun David Hutchinson

I also have an arc of this book but it’s such a highly anticipated release for me. Shaun David Hutchinson is one of my favourite authors, but this book is about a saphhic woman which is obviously different from his usual m/m romances. However, I actually have really high hopes in this book and the subject matter – basically the main character dealing with a biblical apocalypse, makes me pretty excited. This is coming out Feb 6!

5: #PrettyBoy Must Die by Kimberly Reid

I think I’ve talked about this before? But if not, I uhh, love spy books. I don’t know why, but I gotta read them all. So this is inspired by #AlexFromTarget, basically the main character who’s a CIA agent goes viral on twitter and how his life is in danger. Plus, I really like that the main character is a black boy and that the cover model is too. Should be short and sweet, coming Feb 13!

6: Bygone Badass Broads: 52 Forgotten Women Who Changed the World by Mackenzi Lee

This is a non fiction book based upon Mackenzi Lee’s popular twitter threads of the same name and I’m SO excited about it. If you’ve seen Mackenzi’s threads, you’d know how they’re both informative and also really funny, and I know she’s taken time to be really inclusive with the women chosen so I think it should be so interesting and definitely introduce me to some women I didn’t know about. Release is March 6th

7: Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

So this book has been on my tbr literally since it’s announcement and it’s starting to get more and more hyped up and I’m getting hyped right along side all that. I’m hearing incredible things about it from reviewers of the arcs and I just can’t wait to get my hands on it. Fantasy is my all time favourite genre and diverse fantasy is the best. It’s coming out so soon I can’t wait, March 6th!

8: The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara

This is based on a true story, and follows a girl who disguises herself as a boy to join a pirate crew. It features an f/f romance between two female pirates and honestly? Have I sold you yet? because I just sold it to myself yet again. I am so into this new sapphic pirate trend, it’s the best! The Unbinding of Mary Reade is coming on March 6th and I’m SO keen.

9: Obsidio by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kuafman

I don’t actually LOVE the Illuminae Files (I know, unpopular opinion) but since I have read the other two book this is an anticipated release for me. There’s nothing more satisfying then finishing a series, and I actually think this book has great potential now that the characters have all met up. This is a fun series for it’s format and so it should be fun to catch it one last time. And if not, at least I can write it down as another completed series. This one is out on March 13!

10: Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles

First of all, THAT COVERRR. But the cover aside, this book sounds like it’s going to be absolutely incredible. I’m really loving contemporary books with activism elements right now and I think this book is gonna slot right in there with that. Plus, I’ve heard so many incredible reviews from people I trust and I just can see this becoming my favourite 2018 read not gonna lie. Tyler Johnson Was Here releases on March 20th

11: Dread Nation by Justina Ireland

I have an arc of this book as well, but I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be such a kickass 2018 release. Black girls fighting zombies? Sign me the fuck up. I’ve seen pretty good arc reviews of this, the cover is so cool and overall I just think it’s going to be an awesome release. I plan on reading my arc soon, but I think this is going to be a great 2018 release. It’s coming out April 3rd

12: Circe by Madeline Miller

The Song of Achilles is one of my favourite books, and I think this is actually gonna be even better. It features Circe, aka the nymph who appears in The Odyssey by Homer. I think Madeline Miller creates incredible, powerful, complex female characters and her take on Circe is gonna be awesome. Plus, I’m a big ancient greek nerd and Miller creating backstories and building more depth into these characters gives me life. Circe comes out April 10th!

13: Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda is obviously one of my favourite books so I’m so excited for this sequel. Leah is a bisexual woman so that should be really good to read, and I’m just excited to catch up with the gang overall. Plus, I love the fat rep on the cover and I think this is going to be a really great release from Becky Albertalli. This one is coming on April 24

14: Record for a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers

I love love love the Wayfarers series and I think this is gonna be the best of them all. For a start, all the characters are coming together again which means I get to see everyone I love and miss from book one. Plus, this is more space travel based rather then planet based like book two so I think that will be fun. Becky Chambers space books are so cute and make me feel all happy and warm, and I cannot wait to dive into the final one. Also, they need to release that cover asap. Becky Chambers has the best covers. Release is July 24th!

15: The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

This is a sequel/spin off to The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue which I really enjoyed. This book will follow Felicity from book one and I definitely think she will be an awesome character to read about in this book, because she’s a massive badass. Plus, there is asexual rep, female pirates and magic so whats not to love. This one is slated for October 2nd, 2018!

16: What if It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera

Becky makes another appearance, but how can she not when this book with Adam Silvera is coming out. Becky and Adam are two authors I love, both from their books individually and also from their interactions on twitter and I just know already this book is gonna destroy me. I’m so interested to see where the two take a story they wrote together, especially considering their tones are quite different. This one is ages away though, October 2nd

17: Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare

Starting out with an obvious one, I’m soo excited for it. It’s the final book in The Dark Artifices series, and I’ve come to expect pretty big things from Cassandra Clare finales after she destroyed me with Clockwork Princess. I genuinely love this series, and I’m really excited to see where she takes these characters and their stories. QOAAD is slated for release on December 4, 2018, which is too far away. But all well.

18: I Was Born for This by Alice Oseman

This is Alice’s new book and I’m so excited. I love Oseman’s Radio Silence and also her Heartstopper Webcomic, and I plan on reading Solitaire soon. Basically, I want to read all her books asap. This one follows a boy band and a fan of theirs, and I know is has muslim and transgender rep. I think this will be incredible I can’t wait, it’s slated for late 2018 release (cover unreleased, title is confirmed to be no longer The Ark but I Was Born For This)

Untitled-1

So thats my top 18 list, though as promised here’s some honourable mentions:

There are way too many amazing new 2018 releases coming up, I truly cannot handle it. I’m so excited to read all these books and even more, even though I’m freaking out a little about when i’m gonna have TIME and MONEY for all this.

Whats your top 2018 releases?

DIVERSE BOOK REVIEW: WANT by Cindy Pon – A scarily accurate future, with incredible diversity and setting.

Summary:

  • my rating: 4 stars
  • published by: Simon Pulse
  • genres: dystopian, speculative future, young adult
  • diversity: Han main character, side Philippine character, side Indian character, side Chinese bisexual character, side f/f relationship
  • where to purchase: Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

Synopsis:

Screen Shot 2017-10-03 at 6.26.32 pm.png

Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits that protect them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths. Frustrated by his city’s corruption and still grieving the loss of his mother, who died as a result of it, Zhou is determined to change things, no matter the cost.

With the help of his friends, Zhou infiltrates the lives of the wealthy in hopes of destroying the international Jin Corporation from within. Jin Corp not only manufactures the special suits the rich rely on, but they may also be manufacturing the pollution that makes them necessary.

Yet the deeper Zhou delves into this new world of excess and wealth, the more muddled his plans become. And against his better judgment, Zhou finds himself falling for Daiyu, the daughter of Jin Corp’s CEO. Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is or destroying his own heart?

Untitled-1

I honestly feel like YA Lit is doing the most work these days. Everyday I read a YA book and am stunned by it’s depth, awareness and perception of the climate and audience it is writing for. It is a genre I have seen make strides just in the last few years – and while work is far from over, God, there is some quality books coming out of YA authors. And WANT is one of them.

WANT has been getting a tonne of attention on my twitter lately, especially among diverse book bloggers and I am so thankful that this brilliant, fun action book ended up on my radar.

WANT is a “dystopian” set in future Taipei, Taiwan. In this distant future, pollution has reached an intolerable level, forcing humans to buy expensive body suits which allow them to breathe the toxic air. The rich can afford to buy these suits, as well as other privileges that come with a wealthy life: expensive clothes, body modifications, cars and technologies. The poor, on the other hand, cannot afford the suits. They die young due to inhaling the toxic air, and live in intense poverty on the polluted streets. Sickness, hunter and hopelessness is rampant.

Our main character, Jason Zhou – as well as his core group of friends learn that Jin Corp, the main producer of the suits, may be deliberately worsening pollution and inhibiting sickness in the poor in order to sell more suits. Disgusted by the treatment of the poor of the city, the crew decide to infiltrate and take down the corrupt government in an attempt to elevate and assist the poor they live among.

Untitled-1

Although this book is technically a dystopian – calling it one seems unaware. I don’t think a future in which pollution and corruption is a direct threat to the lives of the poor is very hard to conceive. In our own world, we are seeing capitalism spiralling out of control, the increase in the gap between the rich and the poor, rising pollution, climate change and the continued hesitancy of many big governments and corporations to do anything about it.

For me, my favourite thing about WANT and why I think it’s such a brilliant book is that it’s topical. The environmentalism and social justice theme was well explored throughout the entire novel. The theming was very tight, at no point did it feel Pon wasn’t sure where she was taking this story. This is awareness and education, mixd in which a genuinely fun story and action plot is a story type becoming more and more common and I have always loved it. The dystopian aspects felt not only realistic, but scarily predictive. I would actually call this speculative fiction – like the Handmaids Tale – more then dystopian.

I also liked how the characters engaged with the issues they faced in society, and their approach to dealing with the issues. We’ve seen chaotic, morally grey characters more and more often in YA. Six of Crows being a good example. But introducing a group of chaotic good characters was fresh, and something I’d like to see more of. Jason and his friends may want to take down a massive corporation for the inside out, but they’re genuinely doing it for the greater good and to fight the corruption they live amongst everyday. This kind of activism is also very relevant in todays social mileu, and chararacters who fight against the evil they see in this kind of way was both fun and also kind of inspiring (but don’t worry, I’m not going to start plotting my take down of Google or anything anytime soon)

Setting wise, WANT is incredible rich and well written. I’ve never been to Taiwan, but this book explored and explained the setting so well it felt like I had. You can tell Pon knows and loves Taipei, the richness and depth in which the setting was explained was amazing. My sister, who HAS been to Taiwan also read this book – and she claims she felt like she’d been back there and this book made her travel sick. So thats pretty high praise coming from her.

The only two aspects in which I felt WANT let me down was character and plot.

The plot is good, I loved the way it revolved around it’s central themes. But the thing I didn’t like about the plot was the main trope it used. Aka, the “infiltrate a group by befriending the daughter of the leader”. I have never been a massive fan of this trope, and I wasn’t a massive fan of it here. It’s always felt like the most boring way to write a heist story and I’m not going to say I hated it, because I didn’t, but I didn’t love it either.

I also felt the side characters were lacking in depth a little. The main character, Jason, was well written and so was his love interest Daiyu. But the side characters were not as well explored, and I would have loved to see more of them. The scenes with the group bantering, hanging out and teasing each other were some of my favourite and so I would have liked a greater focus on the cast as a whole.

Representation:

Jason, the main character, is ethnically Han. Victor, one of the members for the group, is from the Philippines. Arun, also in the crew is Indian. There is a side relationship between two Asian women, Lingyi is bisexual. The other girl, Iris, has no sexuality explicitly stated.

In Conclusion:

WANT is a unique book in the YA genre. The authors note shares that this is the first book in YA to be set in Taiwan, and that to me is so so exciting. We need diverse books! This book is just so fresh, so fun, so exciting. I adored the theming. The setting and culture, written so expertly as this is #OwnVoices was a delight. I think this is a book which really exemplifies why diverse literature from own voices authors is so so important.

I highly recommend WANT to everyone. I really do. If you’re a fan of Six if Crows you HAVE to read it.

I am so looking forward to it’s sequel RUSE coming in 2019 (So far away! the cruelty !!)

Thankyou for reading my review, I’d love to know what everyone else thought of WANT!

Synopsis:

On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure and to live a lifetime in a single day.

Adam Silvera is one of those authors everyone needs to read, at least once. His writing style is brilliant – full of raw emotion, poignant themes and characters that not only fill the page but burst off of it.  It’s impossible not to feel something reading an Adam Silvera book – his work resonates with so many people so strongly, especially in the lgbt+ community, and I have no doubt They Both Die At the End is going to hit just as hard as his previous releases.

They Both Die at The End is a roller coaster of emotions – incredibly sad, and yet unendingly hopeful. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what emotion I felt most upon finishing, there was so much sadness, lots of frustration, a little bit of happy, all mixed up together in one ugly messy ball.  But I think thats how this book should be, it’s a book that makes you feel everything, and Adam Silvera is an absolute genius when it comes to writing those feelings into a book. There was so much tension building up to the finale, and so it packed a massive punch when it finally hit.

The dichotomy between Rufus and Mateo’s character, and how they approach life and death makes their dynamic very interesting. Both have brilliant character arcs, which are only developed because the two met each other. Diversity wise, the characters are also a massive plus – Mateo is gay and Puerto Rican, and Rufus is bisexual and Cuban-American.

I really enjoyed Mateo and Rufus as characters, and how they went about their last day. Both have issues and trials which they are dealing with, and the exploration of these problems, as well as their own insecurities and flaws was probably my favourite part of the book. It’s a great character study and I really cared a lot about Mateo and Rufus by the end. The only character complaint I had was about the romance, actually. Something about it just didn’t stick with me. I liked the romance enough, but I also felt like I should have liked it more. The romantic scenes didn’t really make me that emotional, and I definitely didn’t feel that invested in Mateo and Rufus as a couple – I really loved their friendship, I really loved their dynamic, I really loved what they found with eachother, I totally understand that on their last day things are going to be rushed, but it did feel really rushed to me and I struggle to get behind that in any book. I suspect this issue with the romance is a “its me, not you” issue, though.

I only really felt like I had an issue with two aspects of this book: the worldbuilding and the side characters. I would have liked a little more worldbuilding, and a little more explanation behind Death-Cast and why it suddenly started telling people when they’re going to die. I thought there was little hints things would be revealed – and when they weren’t I was disappointed. As for the side characters, I couldn’t really connect with any of them. I liked Lydia and the Plutos – but the other side characters with POV’s didn’t really make me feel anything.

However, I want to stress these flaws are so minor and really don’t detract from the book overall at all!   I recommend They Both Die At the End so highly, to be honest. Mateo and Rufus are incredibly well written characters and their arcs are amazing. They Both Die at The End promises an emotional ride – theres going to be ups and downs, and many many tears, but that is what makes it so worth it.

They Both Die at the End releases on September 5th from HarperCollins and can be preordered on Amazon, Barnes&Noble and IndieBound. Thankyou to HarperCollins for sending me an arc!

ARC REVIEW: Warcross by Marie Lu

Quick Facts:

  • my rating: 5 stars
  • published by: G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers
  • genres: science fiction, young adult,
  • diverse: yes

Synopsis:

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross

Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

Warcross is Marie Lu’s seventh book, the first in her newest duology of the same name. I’m a massive fan of Marie Lu’s books, and was incredibly excited to get my hands on this book. I definitely was not let down.

Warcross is an action packed, “my heart is in my throat and I can’t breathe“, wonderfully vivid sci-fi thriller set in Tokyo. In a world revolutionised by interactive, immersive virtual reality called Warcross. Emika Chen – bounty hunter, hacker and rainbow haired badass – is hired by the creator or Warcross to go undercover and track down a mysterious person dubbed “Zero” who’s putting Warcross in jeopardy.

It definitely lives up to it’s thriller tag – every moment is exciting, and it’s one of those books you just need to keep reading. You’ll find yourself at midnight tell yourself “just one more chapter” .. trust me.

The worldbuilding really impressed me. Warcross is set in Tokyo, and the descriptions of Tokyo and how it has been altered by Warcross, as well as the descriptions of the worlds within Warcross were vivid and exciting. I adored the imagery and descriptions used throughout Warcross.

Character wise I think Warcross was also very strong. The diversity was amazing! Emika, the main character, is Chinese/American. Hideo, her love interest, is Japanese. One side character was black, one was brown, one used a wheelchair and there was also a side m/m romance – (although the characters are not romantically involved in Warcross they are ex-boyfriends so don’t expect any actual m/m romance) The characters themselves were well written, and each is driven by complex motivations and reasonings. The backstory given to each character gives them depth and believability. Personally, I loved Emika as the main character, she’s brilliant, talented, determined and flawed all of which made her a delightful character to follow. The romance was also pretty slow-burn which I liked.

Untitled-1.png

Warcross is a fun and exciting book full of memorable characters and thrilling action. I adored the dynamics between the characters and the setting. The elements building up the story made it unique and interesting, and Marie Lu truly has a gift at drawing you in and not letting you go until the final page.

Warcross is a book full of spies, hackers, the dark web, illegal auctions, thrilling action, futuristic settings and features engaging international sports events, great diverse characters and an interesting protagonist you can really get behind. Cannot wait for the sequel.

Warcross releases on September 12th, 2017.

Highly Anticipated Books: What I’m looking forward to most in the second half of 2017

I think we can all agree 2017 has been a great year for new releases already. Need I remind you we’ve already had AMAZING new releases.  Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare, At the Edge of the Universe by Shaun David Hutchinson, The Gentlemans Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee, Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde, A Conjuring of Light by V.E Schwab, The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli and so so so many more. Those are just the ones I’VE managed to read.

But there is still so so so much more to come! And so this is a little list of everything I’m looking forward to in the second half of 2017.

1: WANT by Cindy Pon

Okaaay, this one has already come out …. but it was only a few days ago and I’m soo excited to read it. It’s a futuristic novel about a group of teenagers who want to try and stop the government from polluting their city. It’s set in Tapei, Taiwan and that setting is so exciting to me. Heard so many good reviews and can’t wait to read it.

2: Wonder Woman: War Bringer by Leigh Bardugo

Probably an obvious entry, I feel like this is on most peoples radar, but I truly am so excited for it. I loved the movie, so more Wonder Woman content is a good thing. Plus, Leigh has proved her storytelling abilities to me over and over again. I’m a massive fan of her work and I can’t wait to love Wonder Woman too.

3: Warcross by Marie Lu

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Warcross and I am LOVING IT. I am in love with Marie Lu and everything she’s written. Her characters and worldbuilding is always so strong, and I just feel like her books have a kind of charm to them? Anyway, so far I’m loving the arc and am anticipating it’s official release very much.

(Can I just say, all these W titles were not intentional? W books are apparently IN this season)

4: Monster by Michael Grant

I don’t think it’s any secret I am a massive fan of the Gone Series, and

the continuation (Monster) is half exciting half scary. I am definitely keen to get back into a world I fell in love with, and return to the characters I missed so much, but I worry the perfect ending to the Gone Series will be spoiled. I also have an arc of this and I cannot wait to really get into it. I adore Michael Grants writing and he’s one of my favourite authors, so I’m putting my trust in him and Monster.

5: They Both Die at The End

Adam Silvera’s book will, in all likelihood, make me cry a lot but I’m ready for it. I loved History is All You Left Me, and since I’ve heard such stellar reviews of TBDATE so far I’m sure it’ll be just as good, if not even better. Adam Silvera has a gift for raw stories and characters and I’m sure TBDATE will have that same realistic, gritty tone that made his past books stand out to me so much.

6: All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater

This one already has a swirl of controversy surrounding it, and I definitely have had issues with Maggie Stiefvater in the past, but I am interested in reading her newest story. Her writing style is beautiful and her characters from The Raven Cycle are some of my favourites ever, so I’m sure her newest release will be very popular.

7: Dear Martin by Nic Stone

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Dear Martin is about a black boy who is arrested by police officers for no reason and how he deals with the aftermath of that situation. It definitely sounds like it’ll be an important and powerful book, and hopefully its greeted with the same positive response The Hate U Give (which it has been compared to) received. Very very excited to read this one!

8: The Gallery of Unfinished Girls by Lauren Karcz

I’m so so excited for this one, it features a bisexual mc !! AND WE NEED MORE OF THOSE. It’s about an artist who’s lost inspiration, which could have something to do with her past and I’ve heard such good reviews of it. Plus the cover is really cute. I admit I don’t know much about it but it’s on my to buy list and it’s releasing really soon so yay

9: Gap Year in Ghost Town by Michael Pryor

This one releases in August and I am SO EXCITED. It’s about a group of kids who fight ghosts in Melbourne – like it’s basically Australian Supernatural. It sounds honestly excellent plus I’m super into the cover. I am always happy to read and support Australian YA Lit and this one looks really promising.

While there are many more, these are my top 9 I’m so excited for. It’s definitely been a great year in book releases but there is still so much more to come and I couldn’t be more excited.

What books are you guys anticipating for the rest of the year?
